The orthodontic layer for Open Dental
Keep scheduling and billing in Open Dental. Run the orthodontic clinical workflow — photos, ceph analysis, proposals, case tracking — in OrthoRecords, with patients, appointments, and ortho chart data syncing automatically through the official Open Dental API.
Automatic patient sync
Demographics, contact info, appointments, procedures, ortho chart entries, and balances flow from Open Dental into the OrthoRecords chart — refreshed on open and on demand.
CDT code mapping
Map standard and custom procedure codes to your ortho appointment types once. Synced appointments classify themselves; unmapped codes get flagged for one-click triage.
Ortho chart and proc notes
Wire and tie entries from Open Dental's ortho chart populate visit records, and procedure notes are parsed into structured clinical fields.
Launch from Open Dental
Open the active patient's OrthoRecords chart from a program link inside Open Dental — no double lookup.
OrthoRecords is an independent product built on the Open Dental API. Open Dental is a trademark of Open Dental Software, Inc.; OrthoRecords is not affiliated with or endorsed by Open Dental Software, Inc.
Frequently asked questions
Does Open Dental have a built-in orthodontic module?
Open Dental includes an ortho chart for per-visit entries, but practices running ortho programs often want more: photo series by position, cephalometric analysis, digital treatment proposals, and case pipeline tracking. OrthoRecords adds that layer on top of Open Dental — your scheduling and billing stay in Open Dental while the orthodontic clinical workflow lives in OrthoRecords, kept in sync automatically.
What syncs from Open Dental into OrthoRecords?
Patient demographics and contact details, appointments with their procedure codes, ortho chart entries (including archwire and tie fields), procedure notes, and account balances. Appointments classify themselves into your ortho appointment types based on the CDT codes you map.
How does the CDT code mapping work?
You map your procedure codes — standard D8000-series codes and any custom codes your practice uses — to appointment types like records, bracketing, treatment, and deband. From then on, synced appointments are typed and roled automatically. Unmapped codes that cause appointments to be skipped are surfaced for one-click triage, so new codes never silently fall through.
Does OrthoRecords write back to Open Dental?
The integration uses the official Open Dental API with your choice of read-only or read-write access tier. Most practices run read-only: Open Dental remains the system of record for scheduling and billing, and OrthoRecords reads from it.
What does setup require?
Open Dental's API support (available on current Open Dental versions) and a customer API key generated in your Open Dental installation. Enter the key in OrthoRecords settings, map your codes, and link patients — typical setup is under an hour, no server changes required.
Can I launch OrthoRecords from inside Open Dental?
Yes. A program link in Open Dental opens the current patient's OrthoRecords chart directly, so the front desk and clinical team jump between the two systems without searching for the patient twice.
